Four firms in the area were badly damaged by a fire on Friday night last.

Athlone Fire Service are hoping to educate business owners on the importance of fire safety.

It comes following a blaze at four premises in Baylough Athlone over the weekend.

A pub, off licence, bookmakers and fast food outlet were evacuated safely and no-one was injured.

Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer for Westmeath Pat Hunt says it's important that business owners understand the dangers associated with fires.

The service hopes to link up with a number of local organisations to provide the training:

We're looking as a result of this fire to get involved with Athlone Chamber of Commerce and indeed the Vintners Federation of Ireland in an effort to educate business owners in the Athlone area and the hinterland about the dangers of fire and how quickly it can spread as the recent two fires have shown and equally to the potential for loss of livelihood and loss of jobs.
