The man who had to watch his crew land on the moon in 1969 passed away this week age 90

A Roscommon author and historian is highlighting the strong connections between a local village and one of the three astronauts involved in the first moon landing.

In 1969, Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins took part in a mission that saw mankind walk on the moon for the first time in human history.

The pilot of the ship, Michael Collins who passed away this week aged 90, has strong family connections to Mount Talbot on the Roscommon/Galway Border.

The astronaut's grandmother left the village and traveled to the United States at age 16 with her daughter going on to marry US Army General, James Lawton Collins.

Paul Connolly, author of Mount Talbot - A Journey Through the Ages, says one local man followed the connections all the way to the astronaut himself:
