Minister Eamon Ryan says developing high quality walking and cycling facilities will encourage more people to switch to active travel and will contribute to tackling climate change

The Minister for Transport has announced nationwide funding of close to 73
million euro under a new rural Active Travel Investment Programme.

Local councils in the Shannonside region will benefit from
close to 7 million euro under the scheme.

The National Transport Authority had originally earmarked 50 million euro
for this scheme, but that figure has increased to over 70 million euro due
to the number of project proposals by local authorities.

Today's funding announcement has been labelled "the first ever major active
travel investment for rural Ireland" and Transport Minister Eamon Ryan says
he hopes the funding will "make walking and cycling attractive, safe and
accessible to everyone".

Locally Leitrim will receive 2.2 million euro to advance
12 projects in the county, while Longford will gain just over 2 million euro
to progress 15 schemes in the area.

Meanwhile, Roscommon's funding of just under 2.4 million euro will benefit
19 active travel projects in the county.
