The Shannonside region is to have a university.
The Minister for Higher Education Simon Harris has confirmed that Athlone Institute of Technology together with Limerick IT has been granted Technological University (TU) status.
As well as increasing higher education access, it will provide enhanced research-led teaching and learning, and drive enhanced regional development.

A date is being considered for the Minister to confirm the designation legally, but it's believed all students graduating in the 2021-2022 academic year will do so with university qualifications.
