It follows an emergency meeting on the issue with the council this morning.

Roscommon councillor Liam Callaghan says access should be restored to the majority of Cloonshanville graveyard from this weekend.

It follows an emergency meeting on the issue with the council this morning.

Local residents were dismayed to find the main gates to the graveyard blocked by the council yesterday afternoon due to safety concerns about the ruins of the abbey on the site.

Councillor Callaghan says the blocking of the main gates was a temporary measure, and a ten metre square security fencing will be erected around the ruins in the next couple of days.

He says access will be allowed to most of the graveyard through the side gates only, and the front gates will be opened during certain hours at the weekend.

The Fine Gael councillor also says the issue makes the restoration of the 800 year old ruins a priority and it's hoped funding can be sourced to make the monument safe again:
