66 Ukrainian refugees living in Longford could be moved from State-supported accommodation by November. They were informed this week that they may no longer be accommodated at three centres in the county. The Government agreed to phase out accommodation that has been provided to people from Ukraine since 2022. This means that the State will no longer be offering accommodation to all people who are beneficiaries of temporary protection who arrived into Ireland before March 2024. This change is being introduced on a phased basis and commenced at the end of last month.
This week, Ukrainians staying at three Longford centres were told their accommodation would cease in October. There are 36 currently being accommodated at The Edgeworth Hotel, 23 at Saint Christopher Parkside, and 7 in Cooney's Hotel. Saint Christopher Parkside residents and those at The Edgeworth Hotel were told they have until October 18th. Meanwhile, those at Cooney's Hotel have been given until October 31st.
Some existing centres will close and be returned to private use. Those affected are being provided with information and supports to help them with future accommodation options. They have the option of applying for continued accommodation at a State-supported centre or sourcing their own accommodation.
