2 incidents of vandalism at Roscommon OPW sites reported this year

Roscommon Castle and Abbey were both victims of vandalism involving graffiti or padlocks being cut from the gates.

The OPW reported 2 incidents of vandalism at 2 historic sites in Roscommon this year.

Padlocks were cut from the gate of Roscommon Castle and a stone removed from an opening, with repairs of €100 being required.

Roscommon Abbey has also been a victim of vandalism, with graffiti reportedly being sprayed onto the abbey wall.

The graffiti had to be removed via steam cleaning at an unknown cost.

According to the OPW, over sixty cases of damage to national monuments have occurred this year, and the OPW have stated it is an ongoing problem.
