The IFI is the state agency responsible for the conservation, protection, management, of hundreds of rivers and lakes and waterways in the Shannonside Northern Sound region.

A 2019 analysis of their work in Roscommon and Leitrim reveals that seven Fixed Charge Penalty Notices were issued in the Roscommon area in 2019 and eleven in Leitrim.

Thirty-three Warnings issued to anglers in the Roscommon area in 2019 and twelve in Leitrim.

Just two prosecutions were initiated but did not get completed - one each in Leitrim and Roscommon - while a total of nine warning letters were issued for water quality infringements.

A dozen seizures of illegal fishing were made in Roscommon in 2019 - including an unattended rod with live bait, as well as eight fyke nets one of which had caught up to 100 eels

In Leitrim, three seizures were made - including one incident when rods and lines, as well as a crayfish trap, were seized .

1680 man-hours were spent on carrying out inspections of recreational anglers for licenses or permits and other anglers in Roscommon in 2019 - and 543 in Leitrim.
