St. John's Athletic land Roscommon and district league premier title

St. John’s Athletic staged a Lazarus comeback to land a first ever Roscommon and District Premier title.

St. John's came back from three goals down at half-time to beat title rivals Moore United 5-3, clinging the league title at Lecarrow this afternoon.

Moore looked to be cruising to their second title in three years at the break thanks to goals from Jay McPhiblin, a Charlie Nevin penalty and a James Byrne header.

However, a dramatic second-half fightback; saw the hosts score five unanswered goals and win the league in the most dramatic of circumstances.

A Daire Keenan penalty on the hour mark gave St. John's a lifeline before stunning strikes from Kevin Brennan and a Cian Kelly free-kick brought them level.

Brennan grabbed his second of the game with 14 minutes remaining, putting the Lecarrow side top of the table. Keenan slotted home his second penalty of the afternoon to confirm St John's as champions.

The new Roscommon champions will now be hoping to complete a double when they take on Glen Celtic in the Challenge Cup final. Rounding off the most successful season in the history of the club.
