St. Dominic’s All-Ireland camogie hopes fell at the last hurdle as Brídíní Óga Glenravel claimed a five-point victory.
Torie Edgar’s accuracy procured a second AIB All-Ireland junior club camogie title for Brídíní Óga Glenravel in three years.
The Brídíní Óga captain hit 0-7, including six frees, to guide her side to victory. As St Dominic’s were left to rue eight second-half wides.
The winners had built up a seven-point buffer at the break, thanks to five points from Edgar and Molly Woulahan’s opportunist goal in the 22nd minute.
To St. Dominic’s credit, they arrested their opponents’ momentum in the second half but they simply couldn’t turn hard-earned possession into scores.
Brídíní Óga enjoyed the aid of the elements in the opening half. Although Dominic’s held firm in the opening quarter, the Antrim champions, in particular Edgar, began to punish indiscretions.
Edgar worked the scoreboard inside a minute with a point from play, but Dominic’s half-back line of Hannah Murray, Lilly Murray and Aimée O’Connor came thundering into the contest.
A brace of Fitzgerald free had catapulted John Haughey’s side 0-2 to 0-1 in front after seven minutes. However, the Knockcroghery side wouldn’t trouble the scoreboard again for the remainder of the half.
Slowly, but surely, Brídíní Óga, led by midfield duo Leona Gillan and Orlaith Gould, began to turn the screw. A hat-trick of Edgar frees between the 13th and 19th minutes edged her side two points in front.
Then, in the 22nd minute, another free from the captain cannoned back off the post, and Molly Woulahan reacted quickest to find the net. There was still time for Edgar to pitch in with her fourth free of the half before Sarah Fyfe clipped over a delightful point on the call of half-time.
Dominic's fight back not enought
To their credit, Dominic’s did everything in their power to try and furrow a way back into proceedings. Fitzgerald’s mishit 35-metre free, which ended up in the net, was the perfect tonic.
But chances came and went, and they couldn’t erode the deficit to no more than three points at any stage.
Kaitlin Egan’s tour-de-force was one of the primary reasons why her side began to win more possession, and she scored one of the points of the game with 12 minutes remaining.
At this stage, every ball was contested with fierce ferocity but Brídíní Óga were able to keep Dominic’s at arm’s length despite just two second-half frees from Edgar.
Lilly Murray’s free in injury time left three points between the sides but there wasn’t enough time for Dominic’s to manufacture another attack to try and get the goal they needed to rescue the game as Brídíní Óga held on for a hard-fought victory. Brídíní Óga Glenravel win out 2-7 to 1-5.
