Roscommon & District League round-up

Roscommon & District league round-up Sunday 22nd February 2026

Most of action last weekend was in the Joes Bar Challenge Cup with a few shock results.

Cup holders St. Johns Athletic were beaten 4–0 at Lecarrow by Mooe United.

While the game was always going to be close few could have predicted the margin of victory for Moore who will now take their place in the Quarter- Finals.

Overall Moore were the much more committed side and fully deserved their win. The Nevin brothers Jack and Charles were the stars for a well organised Moore.

Charles Nevin opened the scoring after 24 minutes, latching onto a good long delivery from Shane Dunning.

Jack Nevin added a second five minutes before half-time and from then on it never looked like the Cup holders would get back in the game.

15 minutes into the second-half, Charles Nevin created an opening for his brother Jack who made it 3–0. Jack Nevin completed his hat trick after good work from his brother on 76 minutes.

Castlerea Celtic are safely through to the last eight thanks to a 2-0 home win over fellow Premier Division side and neighbours Ballymoe FC.

Overall it was a good Cup tie with little between the sides. The hosts were slightly the better in the first-half.

Jack Higgins volleyed to the Ballymoe net on the half-hour after a good Ryan Larkin header came back off the post.

In the second-half against the run of play Kailin Barlow got on the end of a Jay McCarthy through ball, pushing it past the advancing goalkeeper.

Ballymoe tried everything but failed to get a score against a strong Castlerea Celtic defence who have not conceded a goal in their last five games.

Nathan O’Connor and Sean Kenny pulled two back for Rahara, but it was too late to make a difference.

St. Johns second side advanced at the expense of Roscommon United second side. The Lecarrow side led 1–0 at half-time but the Roscommon side had their keeper sent-off and St. Johns ran out 8–0 winners.

In the P K Trailers sponsored Division 1, Ballaghaderreen had a 4–2 win over Cloonfad United at Ballaghaderreen.

Cloonfad had no answer to the second-half onslaught from the hosts as they fell to their first defeat of 2026.

Playing with the aid of a strong wind at their backs, Cloonfad took the lead on 11 minutes as a home defender headed to his own net from a Darragh Flynn corner.

Cloonfad doubled their advantage on 33 minutes when Jack Madden intercepted a back pass to the Ballaghaderreen keeper and finished with a beautiful chip to the net.

The second-half was a totally different affair with Peter Horan pulling a goal back for the hosts on 48 minutes.

The last 20 minutes proved very difficult for Cloonfad as they could not cope with the superior pace and power of a fired-up hosts.

Ballaghadreen drew level on 72 minutes through Peter Horan and Christopher Dunne. Cathal Horan added two more before the end.

CP Ajax conceded their game to Ballinasloe.
