Roscommon and district league round-up

St. Johns Athletic retained the Premier Division Championship with a 1–0 win over Skyvalley Rovers at Lecarrow on Sunday.

With a game left to play, the Lecarrow side were worthy champions, having only been beaten on two occasions in 13 league games.

The visitors battled for every ball and while the hosts had more chances, it was left to a well taken Daire Keenan 36th minute goal that secured the title.

The best result of the day was surely at Cloonfad. The hosts advanced to the Connacht Shield final with an impressive 4–0 win over a fancied Galway City side Galway Hibernia.

Cloonfad made good use of a strong wind in the first-half and were 4–0 up at half-time.

After just two minutes Darragh Flynn won a penalty for Cloonfad. Michael McGarry converted the spot kick.

Four minutes later, a stunning 35 meter volley by Jarlath Carney found the top corner of the Hibernia net.

Six minutes later Jack Madden headed an Andy Glennon free kick to the net and just before half-time Madden beat the offside trap and added a fourth for Cloonfad United.

Cloonfad defended really well in the second-half. Goalkeeper Shane O’Malley made sure the Galway side never got a foothold in the game.

Cloonfad United can now look forward to a final against the Sligo side Ballymote. Which will be played on either the ninth or 10th of May at a neutral venue.

Boyle Celtic secured the Premier Division runners up thanks to a 3–2 win at home to Shiven Rovers.

Michael Corrigan, Shane Carroll and Shane Battles had the hosts three up with 67 minutes played. Stephen Murray and an own goal gave Shiven chance, but time ran out for them to get an equaliser.

Castlerea Celtic finish in third place

Castlerea Celtic missed out on a chance to finish runners up after losing, 3–2 away to Dunmore Town.

Frank Coleman and Thomas Byrne gave Dunmore an early lead. Castlerea Celtic pulled one back through an own goal. However, Ben Glynn soon restored Dunmore’s two goal cushion.

James Egan Satchwell added a second for Dunmore, with seven minutes remaining but they failed to get an equaliser.

Moore United and Ballymoe FC drew 4–4 in their game at Lecarrow. Jack Nevin gave Moore a 1–0 lead after seven minutes. However, Damien Goggins had the side’s level two minutes later.

Goggins struck again for Ballymoe early in the second-half and Coor Kennedy made it 3-1 for Ballymoe on the hour mark.

Sean Finneran and Jack Nevin replied for Moore before Richard Thompson restored the Ballymoe lead. Chares Nevin converted a penalty in injury time to snatch a point for Moore United.,

Division 1 Champions, Ballinahown drew 1–1 with Ballinasloe Town at Ballinahown.

Ian Rosney gave the hosts a 1–0 lead after 21 minutes. Ryan McCombe converted a for Ballinasloe penalty after 37 minutes.

Glenamaddy side Glen Celtic were crowned Division 2 Champions with two games remaining.

While beaten on 2-1 by Cam Celtic/Dysart on Sunday their nearest challengers Ballyboro were also beaten and cannot catch the new champions.

Ben Moran gave the hosts a 1-0 lead after 36 minutes. Whereas, Conor Raftery levelled the game on the hour mark. David Cummins found the winner for Cam/Dysart.

Division two shield

In the preliminary round of the division two shield Roscommon United second side beat Moore United 5–0 at Lecarrow.

Carlos Araujo opened the scoring on 17 minutes. Ramario Silva, Joao Pedro, Jack Cronin and Marcello scored for United.

In round one, Ballinagare beat the Ballinlough side Lough Harps 3–0 at Ballinagare. Tom Ward was man of the match, and scored all three goals.

St Cuans/Ahascragh United beat Roscommon United first team 2–1 at Roscommon. Darrell Finn and Liam O’Connor had St Cuans/Ahascragh 2-0 up after 38 minutes.

Gustavo Da Silva pulled one back with 10 minutes remaining. However, St Cuans/Ahascragh United failed to get an equaliser.

In the FAI Women’s Cup round 2, Dunmore Town were very unlucky not to advance when beaten 2-0 after extra-time by the Galway side Knocknacarra at Dunmore.

In the only game played in the women’s League Ballaghaderreen beat Shiven Rovers, a game played during terrible weather conditions.

Ballaghaderreen played with the wind in the first-half and Amy Doorey had them a goal up with only five minutes played. Grace McDermott added a second a few minutes later and Amy Dorey made it 3–0 after 15 minutes.

In the second-half, Shiven Rovers pulled one back after ten minutes through Rebecca Ruthland. However, they failed to close the gap on Ballaghaderreen.

Ballaghaderreen will play Dunmore in the last league game of the season with the winner crowned women’s league Champions.
