Padraig Pearses and St. Brigids play out stalemate

Replay set for Saturday November 1

St Brigids and Padraig Pearse draw thrilling final. A late Paul Carey free sailed wide with the last kick of the game as the Roscommon final heads for a replay.

St Brigids and Padraig Pearses played out the first drawn Roscommon senior football final since 2008 this afternoon. Brigids and Pearses drawing 1-15 each.

Brigids started the stronger, Ben O’Carroll fired over a simple free. Eddie Nolan utilizing the breeze at his back, fired over an excellent two-pointer inside four minutes.

Eoin Colleran got Padraig Pearses first score of his left boot after six minutes.

Ruaidhri Fallon got his side’s second pointer of the afternoon after nine minutes. Ben O’Carroll added another free from close range.

Bobby Nugent continued Brigids strong start, extending their lead to seven points with a garryowen style punt that dropped over the Padraig Pearses crossbar. After 11 minutes Brigids led eight points to one.

Conor Ryan forcefully drove a two-point effort over from the ground, into the face of a strong breeze.

Brian Derwin and Caelum Keogh traded points, before Jack Tumulty showed a burst of pace, creating an opening on goal but opted to fist over.

Paul Carey got his first score of the afternoon with a 13-metre free. Indeed, Ben O’Carroll took up the same opportunity at the other end, bringing the first-half to an end.

At half-time St. Brigids led by six points, 12 points to six.

A fracas at the end of the first-half saw Paul McGrath issued a black card when he re-emerged for the second-half. Whereas, Ronan Daly and Paul Carey both receiving a yellow for Pearses.

Padraig Pearses started much the stronger of the two sides in the second-half. Conor Ryan and Declan Kenny finding their range from outside the two-point arc inside three minutes of the restart.

Eoin Colleran brought it back to a one-point contest with a well taken point from play after 35 minutes.

Brigids struck a minute later when Ben O’Carroll expertly laid off the ball to Robbie Dolan who timed his run to perfection and buried the ball past Paul Whelan into the Padraig Pearse net.

Bobby Nugent did extremely well to find the target, getting his shot away off balance. Indeed, Sean Canning raced through to take his point immediately after for Padraig Pearses.

Padraig Pearses raised the green flag after 51 minutes. Adam McGreal palmed the ball to the back of the Brigids net having being teed up by Jack Tumulty.

Pearses confidence grew even further when Ronan Daly got his first score of the day with a two-pointer on 54 minute. Pearses taking a one-point lead, 1-14 to 1-13.

A Ben O’Carroll free levelled proceedings on 59 minutes as five minutes of added time were indicated.

Declan Kenny restored the advantage for Padraig Pearse in the first minute of additional time from play.

However, Brian Stack and St. Brigids had other ideas though. Stack capped an outstanding performance this afternoon bringing the game to a replay with a calmly taken point in the fifth minute of added time.

Padraig Pearse had an opportunity to clinch the title with the final kick of the game but a two-point effort from Paul Carey sailed wide, with both teams set to do battle again next weekend.

The Roscommon SFC final replay will take place on Saturday November first at 2.30pm in Dr. Hyde Park.
