The concession of five first-half goals proved fatal to Longford’s Leinster campaign this afternoon.
Brandon Kelly hit Westmeath’s opening goal after five minutes. Longford struck a goal of their own on 10 minutes through James Moran. However, moments later Luke Loughlin replied in kind for Westmeath.
After 11 minutes Longford were trailing by three points, 2-2 to 1-2.
Daniel Reynolds kicked a point for Longford, before Matthew Whittaker and Luke Loughlin replied for Westmeath. Brandon Kelly got his second goal of the contest on 15 minutes.
Dylan Farrell kicked a two-pointer for Longford on 22 minutes as they struggled to keep in touch.
Luke Loughlin and Matthew Whittaker added two further goals for Westmeath inside two minutes on approaching the half hour mark.
Dylan Farrell kicked Longford final score of the first half, as Longford trailed heading to the break. Westmeath held a 13 point lead at half-time, 5-9 to 1-8.
Dylan Farrell and Dessie Reynolds kicked a two pointer each for Longford in the second-half. However, Westmeath were in firm control as Ray Connellon and Danny McCartan kicked points for the visitors.
A further Ray Connellon point followed by a Tom Molloy effort put Westmeath further ahead as a late Dylan Farrell point done little to impact the scoreboard.
A disappointing afternoon came to an end with Westmeath running out 21 point winners, 5-25 to 1-16.
