It was a night of surprises as the second round of the Leitrim senior championship took place.
The new championship format has it’s objectors but it’s making a very interesting run to the knockout stages.
Ballinamore Sean O’Heslin’s 0-11 St Marys 0-12
Built as the game of the round, this one lived up to all expectations. The defending champions were good but St. Mary’s Kiltoghert where better!
Two late points saw Mary’s lead by two points at half-time. The expected retaliation from the champions arrived.
Mary’s were strong and it took an injury time winner from Jack Barnes to secure the victory and down Ballinamore.
Mohill 1-14 Fenagh St Caillins 1-17
This was the game of the evening as Fenagh scored their first win over Mohill in three years.
Keith Beirne was at his excellent best kicking 1-5 of Mohill’s first-half scores. Fenagh led 1-8 to 1-6 at half-time.
Fenagh though sensed victory the second-half and fought with determation holding off the vistors.
Mohill battled throught the second-half but Fenagh held-on to secue their first win over Mohill in three years.
Gortletteragh 1-10 Glencar Manorhamilton 0-16
This one went the way that was expected. Glencar were always in control and led by four points at half-time. Eight points to four.
Gortletteragh found the net in the second-half Glencar-Manor weren’t deterred and won out by three points.
Leitrim Gaels 3-9 Dromahair 0-8
Leitrim Gaels are turning into the surprise package of this season’s championship. Two wins from two and suddenly the door has opened up for a quarter-final place.
The village side were always in control. Dromahair were always up against it and in reality struggled to lay a glove on the Gaels whose score difference has been improved immensely.
Aughawillan 2-8 Melvin Gaels 0-6
This was another one of those games where the score-line didn’t reflect the match.
Aughawillan were always in control in this one, leading 1-4 to 0-2 at half-time. Melvin Gaels had no chance after Aughawillan found the net early in the second-half.
Mevlin Gaels will struggle to stay in the senior grade. Aughawillan can focus on reaching the knockout stages.
