Connacht Cup and Shield take centre stage

Roscommon and District League round-up November third

The second-round Connacht Cup and Shield games took centre stage last weekend with some good results from Roscommon and District League teams.

Castlerea Celtic had an impressive 5–0 win over the Sligo side Kilglass/Enniscrone at Castlerea. Jay McCartney opened the scoring after five minutes when set-up by Kailin Barlow.

McCartney returned the favour after the break when he provided the passes for Barlow to score twice. Sean Og Bergin and Oisin O’Farrell added one each before the end.

Ballinahown F.C beat fellow division 1 side Moylough 79 4–1 at Moylough. Oisin O’Reilly opened the scoring for Ballinahown after nine minutes. Shane Allen added another 10 minutes later.

Sean Kelly pulled one back for Moylough on the half-hour, but Lis Kelly and Ciaran O’Reilly added two more for Ballinahown.

Skyvalley Rovers failed to advance to round three when beaten at home by Galway Premier side Maree/Oranmore.

The visitor’s scored after 10 minutes. However, the hosts rallied and on two occasions in the first-half. Indeed, they had the ball in the Maree/Oranmore net but both goals were chalked off.

Skyvalley Rovers equalised after 14 minutes of the second-half. A good Eoin Keogh found Emmit Kelly who scored.

Both teams nearly scored. However, in the second minute of additional time, the visitors won a corner and Shane Cox got a vital touch in a crowded six yard box to score the winners.

Premier Side Moore United had a hard earned but impressive 5–4 extra-time win over Sligo side Calry Bohs.

Josh Lennon scored twice and Charles Nevin one in normal time. Sean Fortune and Charles Nevin added two more in extra-time to seal a place in round three.

Boyle Celtic bow out

Premier side Boyle Celtic were unlucky to be beaten 3–2 after extra-time away to Ballina side Conn Rangers.

Michael Corrigan converted a penalty to give Boyle a 1–0 lead after 20 minutes. The hosts scored twice before Michael Corrigan added his second to send the game into extra-time.

Unfortunately, Eoin Prendergast scored the decider in the second period of extra-time.

In the Connacht Shield, Cloonfad United had a good 4–3 win over the Mayo side Swinford at Cloonfad.

Swinford took the lead after 13 minutes. However, Conor Flynn levelled the game after 28 minutes.

Aidan Sloyan gave the home side a 2 – 1 half time lead but Swinford were level after ten minutes of play in the second-half.

Shane O’Malley restored the Cloonfad lead within seconds. Whereas, David Hennessy made it 4–2 with Swinford adding their third, two minutes from the end.

A young Glen Celtic side were beaten 5–2 away to Colga FC.

The Glenamaddy side were in contention for most of the game thanks to two goals by Gavin Hegarty. However, Colga scored a couple of late goals to seal victory.

Moyne Villa beat Moore United second side 5–3 at Headford.

The game between Ballaghaderreen and Ballisodare was abandoned when their keeper suffered a serious leg injury.

Ballaghaderreen were leading 3–2 at the time with about five minutes left to play.

St. Johns Athletic “B” were beaten 2-1 away to Galway Hibs with Dered Doyle scoring their goal.

Division 2 and Women's League round-up

Division 2 side Lough Harps had a good 2–0 win over Corrib Celtic at Ballinlough.

Tiernan Murphy gave Harps the lead after 28 minutes and David Frayne added a second with 22 minutes remaining.

Carrick Town drew 2–2 at Carrick-on-Shannon against Tuam side Dynamo Blues, but they were eventually beaten following a penalty shoot-out.

In the only Premier Division game, St. Johns Athletic came from behind to beat Shiven Rovers 3–2 at Lecarrow.

Stephen Francis gave the hosts a 1–0 half-time lead. However, Stephen Murray and Seamus O’Kelly had Shiven Rovers ahead early in the second-half.

Cian Kelly and Daire Keenan scored for the hosts who took three valuable points.

In the Roscommon and District Women’s League a powerful and experienced Dunmore Town side beat a Roscommon United side, 12 – 0 at Dunmore.

Aoife Smyth scored five, Ashling Hynes and Lily Concannon two each and Amy Burns, Siobhan O’Grady and Sarah Cosgrove added one each.

Boyle Celtic beat Kilkerrin Utd 2 – 0 at Boyle. Emma Duggan and Sinead O Donoghue scored their goals.

Ballaghaderreen F.C beat Carrick Town 8–0 in a game played on the ASTRO Turf at Gurteen.

Jessica Feeney scored two and Amy Downey Grace McDermott, Robyn Ni Tuathaig added one each in the first-half. Rebecca Finan added two more after the break and Jessica Feeney completed the scoring for Ballaghaderreen.

Dunmore Town, Ballaghaderreen and Boyle Celtic are all in the title race with Castlerea Celtic who got the points from their game with Shiven rovers still in with a chance of catching the leaders.
