Cian McPhillips broke the stadium record when winning the Morton Games 800 metres last night.
McPhillips posted the fastest 800m run by an Irish athlete on Irish soil when winning out in 1:44.19.
The Longford man was in second place entering the final 100 meters, tracking Poland’s Maciej Wyderka on the bend. However, a surge down the home straight saw McPhillips home in 1:44.19 for victory.
The 2021 European U20 1500m champion slashed more than one second off his lifetime best. The time also moved McPhillips to second on the Irish all-time list behind Mark English’s record of 1:43.92.
Elsewhere, Sharlene Mawdsley won the 400m in 51.61 seconds ahead of Lisanne de Witte. De Witte was part of the Netherlands' gold medal-winning team in the 4x400m at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.
Whereas, Andrew Coscoran won the famous Morton mile in 3:51.12 ahead of teammate Cathal Doyle in 3:51.26
