Cian McPhillips set another Irish record as he finished fourth in the World Championship 800m final.

The Longford man powered home like a train down the straight breaking the Irish record in what was the fastest World 800m final off all time.

In last position coming up to the bend, McPhillips finished strongly, setting a new national record of 1:42.15 and missing out on a medal by just 0.8 of a second.

I feel “a bit p***ed, but that has to be expected. When I calm down I’ll probably appreciate a bit more what I did” explained McPhillips.

“That was basically an Olympic final” McPhillips explained. “I got beaten by the three medallist. I thought I might have had them if I had a bit more home straight to work with it”.

“That will come next time. I gave it everything I had, I don’t think I could have ran it any differently and done any better”.

“First European home, I think I showed pretty decent tactical awareness throughout the rounds” McPhillips added.

Kenya's Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi won gold in a championship record time of 1:41.86. Whereas, Algeria's Djamel Sedjati took silver in 1:41.90 and Canada's Marco Arop was just ahead of McPhilips to claim bronze in 1:41.95.
