Longford Town awarded 2026 League of Ireland license

John Caulfield has signed a new contract to remain as Galway United manager for the next two years.

The Lecarrow native joined Galway in 2020 and helped the Tribesmen regain their Premier Division status in 2023. Galway finished eighth last season and reached the quarter-finals of the FAI Cup.

“I'm delighted to sign a new two-year contract with the club. I'd like to thank Luke & Brian Comer of the Comer Group and the board of Galway United for their support."

“This year was obviously very difficult with the passing of Ollie (Horgan). But I'm very excited and committed that we all work together to ensure the city and county have an established League of Ireland Premier Division team”.

“It is a continuation of our progress of building and making the club stronger; moving from being part time only a number of years ago to a full-time setup in the Premier Division."

The Roscommon native managed Cork City to the League of Ireland title in 2017 and won two FAI Cups with Cork in 2016 and 17.

League of Ireland licenses awarded

Meanwhile, Longford Town and Athlone Town were awarded League of Ireland men’s first division licenses this morning. Indeed, Both teams can compete in the 2026 League of Ireland first division.

12 teams were awarded premier division titles. Cork City and UCD both received premier division license but will play their 2026 football in division one.

Men's Premier Division Licence (12): Bohemian FC, Cork City FC, Derry City FC, Drogheda United FC, Dundalk FC; Galway United FC, Shamrock Rovers FC, Shelbourne FC, Sligo Rovers FC, St. Patrick’s Athletic FC, UCD AFC, Waterford FC.

Men's First Division Licence (8): Athlone Town AFC, Bray Wanderers FC, Cobh Ramblers FC, Finn Harps FC, Kerry FC, Longford Town FC, Treaty United FC, Wexford FC.

Women’s Premier Division Licence (12): Athlone Town AFC, Bohemian FC, Cork City FC, DLR Waves, Galway United FC, Peamount United FC, Shamrock Rovers FC, Shelbourne FC, Sligo Rovers FC, Treaty United FC, Waterford FC, Wexford FC
