Work on new sports centre in Roscommon expected to start in 2027

The project is estimated to cost €19.5m.

Construction work is expected to start in 2027 on an almost €20m sports centre in Roscommon town. The planning and development of the project is one of Roscommon County Council's priorities for next year. Next Wednesday the council will sign off on an €86m budget for 2026 - an increase of over €6m on this year's. Over 13 million will be spent on housing and building, and almost 33 million on roads.

The draft Budget confirms it's proposed to increase commercial rates by 5% next year. But chief executive Shane Tiernan says this will only impact 4% of ratepayers as a small business support scheme will wipe out the increase for everyone else. He says one of the priorities for next year will be the planning and development of a sports centre, called iRos, in Roscommon town. According to the council's capital programme for 2026 to 2028, the planning process for this indoor recreation and outdoor sports facility will commence "before 2026".

Subject to planning and funding, detailed design and construction is expected to start in 2027. The project is estimated to cost €19.5m.
