Up to 40 firefighters have been battling a large fire in the Cloonfower area of west Roscommon since lunchtime today. Fire services from Ballaghaderreen, Boyle, Ballyhaunis and Charlestown are at the scene near Loughglynn where flames have engulfed fields and forestry.
Chief Fire Officer John Keane says a request has been made for a helicopter to help fight the fire as a containment operation continues. He says the fire service is working hard to prevent the flames reaching local homes, roads, and forestry plantations.
Mr Keane advised motorists to exercise caution in the area and homeowners to keep windows and doors shut. He has also urged members of the public to avoid travelling to the area to observe the incident.
