UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon could be set to end

The mandate for the operation is renewed annually, and its current authorisation expires on Sunday.

The future of Irish peacekeeping missions in Lebanon will be decided today.

The UN Security Council will be asked to vote on the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) missions renewal, and its expected it will be extended until late 2027.

The mandate for the operation is renewed annually, and its current authorisation expires on Sunday.

Around 340 personnel are currently deployed at Camp Shamrock in Lebanon and more than 10,000 Irish troops have served there since 1978.

Irish troops have been peacekeeping in South Lebanon since 1978, with over 300 soldiers currently in the region.

Security analyst Declan Power says today's vote is designed to avoid a chaotic end to the UNIFIL presence in Lebanon:
