Two nursing homes in north Roscommon have received mixed reports from the health watchdog. Unannounced inspections took place in Abbey Haven and Plunkett Community Nursing Unit, in Boyle last year. The details of both inspections have been published this week. Abbey Haven is a purpose-built facility which can accommodate a maximum of 63 residents.
While inspectors found significant improvements since earlier in the year - concerns remain. Staffing levels, especially at night, were judged insufficient to ensure timely assistance and safe evacuation in an emergency. Infection prevention and control practices still need strengthening. The Plunkett Community Nursing Unit is also a purpose-built facility, which can accommodate 33 residents. HIQA found a generally high standard of care and organisation there.
Residents and staff interactions were observed to be respectful and supportive. The centre was well maintained, with bright communal spaces and secure outdoor areas. However, some administrative improvements were flagged - including updating the official residents' directory.
