Students from across the Shannonside region are awaiting the results of the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition today.
37 projects from 14 schools in Longford, Leitrim, and Roscommon are competing for top honours, with the winners due to be announced at 7pm this evening
Aoife Giblin and Jessica Jones from Scoil Mhuire Strokestown have developed a built-in weight indicator for a child's car seat.
Aoife says the goal would be to get their prototype installed in real cars to improve road safety.
"I was doing my theory test and when I got to the child safety section, in big bold writing, it said a child has to be a certain weight for a certain child seat. Doctor's check-up appointments only last until their about 6 months old and they're weighed at these appointments but after that, parents have no idea what weight their child is. Our idea really is to hopefully get in contact with car seat manufacturers so that we can make a car seat big enough so we can put our prototype into it, so it's built into it".
