The need for extra school accommodation space at St Mel's College in Longford has been raised in the Seanad in recent days by local Senator Micheal Carrigy.

The Fine Gael Senator said an application for the project which involves the replacement of nine prefab classrooms was lodged with the Department of Education in January this year.

He says if funding is received, the plan is to put a new technical graphics room, a music room, a computer room, and a career guidance suite into an existing 1865 building.

Minister Josepha Madigan says an assessment of the application from St Mel's is being carried out at the moment, and the school will be able to go to planning if it's a positive review:
