A young Roscommon man has been praised for discovering an ancient oak bog boat that could be thousands of years old.

A team of archaeologist from the national Monuments service and national museum this week have inspected the boat discovered in Lough Clonacooly in Lisacul.

12-year-old Cathal McDonagh discovered the boat while taking a break near the local waterway and realised the boat was covered by just a few inches of water.

His family carefully removed the boat at the time and then re submerged it until experts arrived this week to carry out a detailed assessment.

A piece of the oak boat, which is almost 5 and a half metres in length and a metre wide was also removed for carbon dating to get a better idea of its origins.

It has also been confirmed that water levels in the lake will be monitored in the future and if the logboat is under threat of uncovering or drying out the National Monuments Service and National Museum of Ireland will take the appropriate actions to ensure its preservation.
