Roscommon TD says local student being left high and dry by school transport scheme

Deputy Denis Naughten brought the issue before the Oireachtas this week.

A local student is being neglected by the Department of Education due to a lack of school bus transport.

That's according to Denis Naughten who says one family in Roscommon is being forced to travel 120km a day to bring their son with autism to school outside the county.

While he has been issued with a transport ticket no bus or driver is currently available.

Deputy Naughten believes the student in question is being left high and dry and he says it was already a struggle for the family to find a special education school place earlier this year.

At an Oireachtas meeting on transport this week the Independent representative called on the Minister for Education to intervene.

"When are these children, who were neglected by the department, were denied school places up until the summer, and are now being left high and dry by the side of the road without a transport service, going to get a transport service that they have a right and an entitlement to".

In response Minister Foley gave a commitment that a bus would be put in place and a grant to reimburse the family would be allocated.

"There is a difficulty in some instances of procuring the bus or bus driver. Bus Éireann is working through that. Absolutely there will be a service for these children provided. They are entitled to it and they will get it. In the interim we can look at a grant to the family until the service is in place".
