A Roscommon guard was honoured at this year's Bravery Awards in Leinster House.
Garda John Caroll received a bronze medal and a certificate of bravery for a rescue mission he conducted in April 2003.
He had responded to reports of a young man entering the River Nore in Kilkenny City and attempted to retrieve him from the water in freezing temperatures and a fast-moving current.
Despite the efforts, the man could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.
