A Roscommon-Galway TD has welcomed new Dáil legislation aimed at protecting access to ATMs and cash services in rural areas.
Independent Ireland's, Michael Fitzmaurice, says the move is long overdue, and recent national events have made it all the more urgent.
The legislation would ensure banks provide a minimum number of cash machines per 100 thousand people.
It was passed by TDs earlier this week and will now go before the Seanad.
Deputy Fitzmaurice says the impact of Storm Éowyn shows how vital it is to protect access to cash.
