Roscommon councillor hopes new funding will help re-open Cloonshanville cemetery

In June of last year access to a small part of the graveyard was lost.

A Roscommon Councillor hopes funding allocated to Cloonshanville Abbey will help fully re-open the adjoining cemetery.

In June of last year access to a small part of the graveyard was lost when a health and safety notice was erected over concerns around the abbey and the bell tower.

Over 28,000 euro has today been allocated to the abbey under the community monuments fund.

Councillor Liam Callaghan is welcoming the funding.

"Cloonshanville cemetery closed last year on health and safety grounds and it caused widespread upset and concern in the local communities, especially in the Frenchpark area. Over 90% of the cemetery was accessible but still some family plots were sealed off since. Hopefully this funding will start the process of coming up with a plan to make the bell tower secure and safe. We're delighted to get this start with the funding"
