There are plans for a national memorial in Roscommon to remember those who died during the Covid pandemic. The project would be part of a proposed looped walk near the River Suck in Athleague. Local group, We Are Athleague, has been working on the project since 2019. Former Roscommon Cathaoirleach Ivan Connaughton says it's hoped it will go to planning this year:
The Covid commemoration is the brainchild of a landowner who purchased 50 acres adjoining the local river. A close relation of the landowner's died during the pandemic and he had planned to rewild the area. Ivan says the looped walk and associated infrastructure will attract visitors to the memorial:
