More help for energy bills could be on the way

Many households are still facing high electricity and gas bills

There are reports households could be set to receive more help with their energy bills.

The latest round of credits, which amount to 600 euro in total, is due to end in April.

But it's widely reported Cabinet may sign off on another 200 euro credit which will be directly applied to energy bills.

The extension of the scheme, if it goes ahead, is a further measure to help with the cost-of-living crisis.

However, Professor of Economics at DCU, Edgar Morgenroth, doesn't believe it should be universally applied for everyone.

'Electricity prices have not come down, so that is affecting households and in particular, poorer households, so that would be rationale to continue and do another €200.

I'm not too sure that better off households need that , you could certainly think of better ways of doing it.'
