A minute's silence has been observed in the Seanad for former cabinet minister Paddy Cooney, from Athlone. The Longford-Westmeath politician served in several ministerial roles in the 1970s and 80s. He died last Saturday at the age of 94, and his funeral will take place in Athlone tomorrow.
He was also a senator for four years, and Senator Padraic Brady paid tribute to his Fine Gael colleague in the Seanad:
