A man's due to be sentenced today in relation to a high-speed crash in Rathowen, Co Westmeath, that left his brother with serious injuries.
A judge described the case, which happened in March 2025, as "absolutely horrific".
Gerard Duffy McAndrew, aged 23, of Ben View, Rathcorbally, Monilea, Co Westmeath, had recently connected with his biological brother, 29-year-old Stephen Murphy, who was adopted at a young age, when he caused him to lose a leg after this high-speed collision.
Duffy McAndrew was the driver of the Audi car and his brother was a passenger.
The car was travelling at around three times the speed limit.
Duffy McAndrew has pleaded guilty to dangerous-driving causing serious bodily harm and driving without insurance.
In Mullingar Circuit Court recently, Judge Keenan Johnson said the case is one of the worst cases of dangerous driving he has ever had to deal with.
He said it has "every aggravating factor in the book - drink, drugs, speed and catastrophic injuries".
Judge Johnson will sentence Gerard Duffy McAndrew today.
