A Longford senator says agriculture took us out of the last recession - and Ireland wouldn't exist without it.
Fine Gael's Paraic Brady was speaking during the first sitting of the new Oireachtas agriculture committee this week.
He says forestry and the next Common Agricultural Policy are among the main issues.
He says it's the number one committee in Leinster House at the moment.
Sinn Féin agricultural spokesman, Deputy Martin Kenny, is also a member of the committee.
The Sligo-Leitrim TD also spoke about the importance of farming at its first sitting.
