A local TD has praised An Garda Síochána and local community groups for their efforts in reducing rural crime. It comes following the publication of CSO figures which show burglaries in Roscommon-Longford fell by almost a third in the space of three months. Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice says the drop can be attributed to arrests made by Gardaí last year.
There were 52 burglaries in the final quarter of 2024 - down from 76 in the previous three months. There was also a drop in the Sligo-Leitrim region in the same timeframe, going from 45 to 20. Speaking to Dan Dooner, Deputy Fitzmaurice paid tribute to community alert groups and the late Cllr Anthony Waldron for raising awareness locally:
