The taskforce, established by the Health Minister, has initially provided eight conditions for which pharmacies could prescribe - such as cold sores, oral thrush and shingles.

A local pharmacist has said it's great news an expert group has recommended pharmacies be allowed to prescribe for common conditions without the need for a patient to visit their GP.

A report from the taskforce says it’s intended to be operational from the second quarter for 2025.

Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show, pharmacist James Geraghty from Molloy Pharmacies, which has branches in Roscommon and Ballaghaderreen, welcomed the development.
