Local MEP welcomes EU commitment to combat period poverty

A 2018 report found that up to 85,000 women in Ireland are at risk of period poverty, with 50 per cent of girls aged 12-19 experiencing challenges accessing products due to cost, stigma, or lack of education.

A local MEP says more work is needed to end menstrual poverty.
It follows the EU's commitment to tackle period and menopause poverty, by exchanging best practices between Member States to inform new policies which will make period products more accessible and affordable.
A 2018 report found that up to 85,000 women in Ireland are at risk of period poverty, with 50 per cent of girls aged 12-19 experiencing challenges accessing products due to cost, stigma, or lack of education.

Midlands-NorthWest MEP Maria Walsh is proposing the removal of VAT on menstrual products, as well as the provision of free pads and tampons in public institutions like schools and universities.
The Fine Gael politician says International Women's Day should be a reflection on the steps that still need to be taken to tackle inequality:
