Local health expert says single antigen tests are a "waste of time"

Antigen testing has played a bigger role in society in recent weeks.

A senior health expert in the North West says single antigen tests are a "waste of time."

The Director of Public Health believes a proportion of infections will be missed if those who are asymptomatic carry out only one DIY test.

However, Dr Anthony Breslin says antigen testing has proven useful in organisational settings where testing is carried out multiple times in a week.

Last month, the HSE began sending a pack of tests to close contacts to undertake three tests in a space of a week.

Currently, Leitrim has the highest incidence rate of the disease nationally.

The number of confirmed cases in the county in the 7 days leading up to midnight on Monday of this week are 270.

Speaking on Let's Talk, Dr Breslin said the public should look for symptoms instead of using singular antigen tests.
