Local councillor says new site would boost tourism

Cllr Waldron said the development would lead to an increase in visitors to the area

Roscommon County Council has been called on to develop a commemorative site at a local Famine burial ground.

Councillor Anthony Waldron introduced a motion at this month's meeting of the local authority proposing the development of the site at an area known locally as 'Bully's Acre' in Roscommon town.

The Independent Councillor says Roscommon was badly affected by the Great Famine of 1845 to 1852 and it was only right that the local authority mark the mass burial site.
