Fine Gael councillor Liam Callaghan has been elected as the cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council.
He was chosen to succeed Fianna Fáil's Paschal Fitzmaurice at the local authority's annual meeting today.
Councillor Callaghan was proposed by his party colleague, Ruth Conboy, and seconded by Fianna Fáil's John Keogh.
No one objected to the proposal and he was deemed the council's first citizen for the next 12 months.
He will be paid an allowance of €20,000.
Councillor Callaghan follows in his father Tom's footsteps, who was cathaoirleach in 1996/97.
They're only the second father-and-son team in history to hold the role, after Martin and Ivan Connaughton.
Councillor Callaghan says it's a bittersweet moment for him, as his father only died recently.
Councillor Keogh was elected as leas-cathaoirleach, a role that includes a €4,000 allowance.
