Leitrim Superintendent urges motorists to change their driving behaviour

National Slowdown Day began at 7am this morning.

The Superintendent of Leitrim is appealing to motorists to change their behaviour when driving on regional and local roads.

Over 77-thousand vehicles have been speed-checked during the first five hours of National Slowdown Day, and 138 were found to be over the limit.

In Roscommon today, a vehicle was detected travelling 114kms per hour in an 80km zone on the R370 Carrick on Shannon to the Four P's.

In Cavan, officers stopped a driver, travelling 89 kms in a 100 kms zone while towing a vehicle.

Roads with a speed limit of 80 kilometers or less are being targeted by Roads Policing Units until 7am tomorrow morning,

Leitrim Superintendent Chris Grogan says while some motorists may have a mind-set that limits on smaller roads are futile, they are in place for a reason
