Two county Roscommon nursing rooms have received largely positive reports from the health watchdog.
Unannounced inspections took place earlier this year at Shannon Lodge in Rooskey and Sonas Nursing Home Inis Ree in Ballyleague, the details of which have been published this week.
Shannon Lodge Nursing Home provides care for 36 residents with a range of care needs from low to maximum.
Inspectors it was found to be a well-managed centre which ensured that residents were provided with good standards of care to meet their assessed needs.
Although there were management systems in place to maintain these standards, inspectors found a decline in the levels of oversight since the last inspection in May 2024.
Inspectors found that residents' needs were regularly assessed and the information within residents' care plans was up to date and sufficiently detailed to guide staff in delivering safe and good quality care.
Despite this, the provider did not ensure that infection prevention and control procedures were consistent with the national standards for infection prevention and control in community services published by the authority.
Sonas nursing home Innis Ree, meanwhile, is a purpose built centre for older people that accommodates 58 residents.
One resident informed the inspector that 'staff were kind and caring', while another said 'staff were terrific'. Similarly, visitors spoken to were complementary of the care that their family members received.
The provider had clear governance arrangements in place to ensure the sustainable delivery of safe and effective infection prevention and control and antimicrobial stewardship.
While the centre generally provided a homely environment for residents, improvements were required in respect of premises and infection prevention and control, which are interdependent.
For example, there were no clinical hand washing facilities on corridors adjacent to resident rooms, to assist in easy access to hand washing.
