Over half a million euro in speeding fines were collected by local Gardai last year. There were 1,300 more fixed charge notices handed out

Over half a million euro in speeding fines were collected by local Gardai last year.

There were 1,300 more fixed charge notices handed out by Gardai in the Shannonside Northern Sound region in 2019 than the previous year.

If you are caught driving over the speed limit, you get three penalty points and a fixed-charge fine of €80 euro, which increases to €120 euro if you don't pay within 28 days.

Freedom of Information figures show that of the local Garda divisions, Sligo-Leitrim collected €472,080 in penalties over the last 2 years, with 5,390 fixed charges given to speeding drivers in that time.

The Roscommon-Longford division had the lowest number of recorded offences in the region.

4,965 fines brought in €433,360 between 2018 and 2019.

More than €20 million euro worth of penalties were settled in the whole of Ireland in the last two years.
