Irish diplomat attacked at his home in Sudan

Fighting between the Sudanese army and rival groups around Khartoum has killed around 200 people in recent days

The Foreign Affairs Minister says an attack on a senior Irish diplomat in Sudan is "deeply concerning".

The EU's Ambassador to Sudan Aidan O'Hara was last night assaulted in his home in Khartoum by a group of men.

He wasn't seriously injured, but Tánaiste Micheál Martin says the attack is a gross violation of the Vienna Convention, which contains obligations to protect diplomats.

Naomi O'Leary,Europe Correspondent with the Irish Times, says over 185 people have been killed in Sudan in recent days:

'Two factions of the army have turned on each other after helping each other overthrow the previous leader.

The usually peaceful city Khartoum has descended into really bad violence with airstrikes, artillery fire raining down, water and power cut in the capital.

Civilians are really feeling the brunt of it. With the hospitals shut, at least 185 people have been killed in the fighting.'
