Instructor says Roscommon rescue highlights importance of swim lessons

Callum jumped into the water and held his grandfather's head on his shoulder as they kicked to shore.

People across the Shannonside region are being reminded of the importance of learning how to swim.

It's after 11 year old Callum Clarke from Tulsk in Roscommon saved his grandfather John Stroker from drowning last Thursday.

The pair had been fishing on a small boat on Killina lake when John who cannot swim, lost his balance.

Callum jumped into the water and held his grandfather's head on his shoulder as they kicked to shore.

The sixth class student had been taking swimming lesson over the summer.

His instructor Ben Moran at Abbey Health and Fitness says it's never too late to learn the lifesaving skill.
