Inland Fisheries Ireland is actively assessing the extent of the invasion of the River Inny by the chub fish species in order to make a plan of action.

The agency has confirmed the re-appearance of the invasive species on the waterway earlier today.

It's the second time in recent years that the fish have been found in the river and major efforts were made between 2006 and 2010 to eradicate them.

Chub are non-native in Ireland and its feared they could seriously damage native fish species and the ecosystem of the waterways.

Dr Cathal Gallagher who's head of research with Inland Fisheries Ireland says they're not happy to see the species back on the Inny again and it's important that action is taken as soon as possible…
