It's hoped that discussions around the re-instatement of the western fourth brigade at Custume barracks will be included in a new Defence Forces commission.

This week it was confirmed that an independent commission on the future of the Defence Forces is being set up.

The organisation has been hit by a recruitment and retention crisis in recent years and the commission will be chaired by Aidan O'Driscoll, a former secretary-general of the departments of justice and agriculture.

The restoration of the key military status for Custume Barracks was included in government formation talks and it's hoped that discussions around changes to military structure will include the Athlone barracks.

Conor King, who is the General Secretary of Representative Association of Commissioned Officers says there will be an overall assessment of military strength:
