Increase in domestic calls locally to Gardaí in 2024

The Shannonside region recorded an increase in the number of domestic abuse calls made to Gardaí in 2024.

Figures published by the Justice Minister show that domestic abuse calls increased by 45 per cent in the past four years.

Sligo-Leitrim Garda Division saw a rate of 10.81 per 1,000 population last year.

While in Longford-Mayo-Roscommon, the rate was 10.21 per 1,000 population.

Since 2019, Gardaí have also secured 52 prosecutions for coercive control, while a total of 67 people have been prosecuted for non-fatal strangulations, 58 of which relate to domestic abuse since November 2023.
