The health watchdog has highlighted a number of non-compliance issues at a county Longford nursing home. HIQA has published the findings of an inspection at St Joseph's Care in Longford which took place in November last year, the details of which have been published today. St Joseph's Care Centre provides 24-hour nursing care for up to 65 residents of all dependency levels, predominantly over 65 years of age. Inspectors raised significant concerns over fire safety and evacuation procedures. Discrepancies were also found in accommodation arrangements, with some residents living in multi-occupancy bedrooms that inspectors said did not adequately protect privacy, dignity or personal space.
Not all residents were found to be receiving sufficient opportunities for meaningful social engagement or recreational activity during the day. Inspectors observed periods where residents were left with little stimulation or interaction. Despite the findings, inspectors acknowledged positive interactions between staff and residents. It was noted that many residents appeared comfortable in the presence of staff and said they felt safe within the centre. The HSE has been directed to implement urgent corrective actions at St Joseph's Care Centre in response to the inspection findings.
